Pu Luong

Rice Terraces • Valley Views • Trekking & Cycling

Pu Luong, in the Thanh Hoa Province of Northern Vietnam, is only 100km from Hanoi, or a 2-hour drive. Yet it’s still a relatively undiscovered area, especially compared to other northern destinations like Sapa or Ha Giang city. A sense of seclusion, solitude and tranquility permeates the cool mountain air here, and will appeal to travellers seeking a more peaceful side of Vietnam.

What to do in Pu Luong Vietnam

It’s odd that Pu Luong remains so far off the tourist trail, when the trails it does offer are some of the most scenic you’ll find in the country. It’s a pleasure to hike between the villages of the Pu Luong Nature Reserve, visiting the Thai ethnic minority group for lunch, before cooling off in Hieu waterfall (the only waterfall in the Reserve).

If you fancy going on two wheels instead of two legs, it’s also easy to rent a bicycle and cycle the small paths around the rice fields. Taking in views of green rice paddies and farmers at work will fill you with the kind of serenity you only get from slowing down and switching off.

Indeed, that’s perhaps the best thing you’ll do in Pu Luong: learning to move at a slower pace, to open your senses to the flow of nature, to not “do” anything at all. Pu Luong Vietnam asks you to practice mindfulness – and it’s a damn pretty place to learn your lesson!

Whenever you feel like engaging with the world again, you can check out one of the local markets – filled with handicrafts, traditional foods, and lively interactions, they’re a highlight of any visit. Like other spots in Northern Vietnam, a homestay visit is always recommended as a way to get a true sense of the area’s heritage and culture. In Pu Luong, that will likely be with the Thai ethnic minority group, known for its unique and delicious cuisine – so arrive hungry!

Pack up for Pu Luong

If gorgeous views, tranquil trails, colourful markets and picturesque accommodation sounds like something you’re into, it’s time to pack your bags – just remember a warm layer and a raincoat when you do!

Whether you’re flying in to Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi, or travelling to Pu Luong from somewhere else in the country, we can arrange a private transfer. If you want to do it the local way, we can advise you on what buses or trains you need to catch, too.

Our on-the-ground travel team know Pu Luong inside out: and we’re excited to introduce you to this unforgettable area. You’re going to love it.
